I applied to Univ of Washington's English Dept as an MA student. I am eagerly awaiting word back. When did you receive your acceptance? Was it through the mail, email, snail or by phone?

If I get accepted people...I will tear the roof off this mofo and crank up the traffic! You can guarantee it! This site seems a bit too quiet.

Finally...anyone play pickup soccer on or near campus?

I am nearly finished with my MS degree. I have nearly enough credits to get a PhD but my school is a Masters only program, which sucks as I will be graduating with 56 credits thanks to a problem with my thesis.

I applied to 10 total and all were PhD programs. 4 Anthropology, 2 Biology/Astrobiology, 1 Geology/Astrobiology, 1 Astronomy/Astrobiology, 1 Psychology, 1 Space Life Sciences. So far I've heard back from Astronomy/Astrobiology with a very generous offer (30K/yr for 4 years). If accepted at UW for Biology and AB, I *will* go there.

The only thing that is really their competition is if I am accepted for Space Life Sciences (but that is unlikely as the rumour is the SLS program is shutting down.)

I do know that certain departments (CS is one) are notifying their applicants. Are you on yuster, thegradcafe, or whogotin?

Wow,that seems like a wide panorama of programs and opportunities. AND you already have 1 in the bag. How about sending me some mojo!

I do lurk at all three of those places. I'm not a fan of Yuster because it's difficult to isolate 2007 info. If I go to English program..there's about 5 different "versions" of English...if I go to my specific schools..I have to still sift through the mass of info. It would be cool if Yuster had a sort function. I do like Whogotin best. thegradcafe seems to be a quality source also.

I applied to all English Lit except 1 school (UCSD) is more of a Comparative Lit program.

It's not realy as wide of a range as you think. My undergraduate degree was in Biological Anthropology and my masters is in Space Studies specializing in Space life sciences. Our definition of Space Life Sciences is different from most people as we include "astrobiology" and "human factors in space" as being in both. My thesis is on psychology. That's why I have such a weird variation. :) The acceptance was a safety school.

Sure I'll send you some mojo if you help me bribe the biology department to accept me. :) The most recent contact I've had said I'm "on the spreadsheet" but apparently that means little so I'm still nervous. I want to go to UW if I can. I sent out an email to get more information on the current standings, but so far no one has responded.

I've never really had a problem isolating 2007 on yuster. I just click on applications, then assure 2007 is selected. I just scan the universities until I see one of mine then check the department. I have automatic notifications set for them. Also yuster, when you search by university, it is in reverse chronological order.

BTW: Sociology, CS, Physics, Psychology, and Astronomy are all sending out notifications for UW. Yuster shows that if you are rejected for English, you'll probably be notified first week of March.

Hey friend-
I rec'd my rejection from UDub today. I'm still shocked because I thought I stood a decent chance of getting in here. It was for the MA program in Lit, not even their PhD program. My "safety" plan was to apply to a couple of places as an MA student because, well, it's a bit complicated. In any case my "thinking" is blowing up in my face because I've only heard back from 2 schools and they were both places I applied to as an MA prospect. I haven't even heard from any PhD Lit yet and I'm pretty sure I know how those are going to go.

Well, good luck to you. I sincerely hope you enjoy planning your future academic career. UW sure seemed like a great atmosphere.

((p.s. You'll probably be seeing me pop up on Yuster shortly))

Hi there,

I haven't even gotten the notification of your livejournal comment yet, but I saw your result on whogotin so I wanted to come by here and tell you how sorry I was to see what the result was. I still haven't heard back from U Wash and its driving me a little crazy. :(

Keep your chin up, last time I applied, I was only accepted to one program and that was an MS only program. I hope you have better luck than I did and I hope one of the PhD programs will come through for you, preferably with lots of funding. :)

If the worst comes to worst, you can take a year or two off, pay down your undergraduate student debt (if you had any) and then reapply in the next cycle or in two cycles from now. That is what a ton of my friends are doing. Or you can try to take graduate classes as a non-graduate student, some departments will let that happen.

If there is anything I can do to help you with anything, please let me know. I know how heart-wretching it is to have your heart set on a school but rejections come out. Did you ask them how you can make your application stonger for next time? If not, you should ask them because that will really help if you have to reapply. Please let me help you if I can. (And feel free to friend me if you want.)

Where else did you apply? If your posting access is any indication, we have two other schools in common (Arizona State and UCLA), neither I have heard from yet though UCLA I think is notifying people already.

Thank you for the well-wishes, I hope everything turns out well for you. I expect that you will get into a grad program some time and if not, I can give you access to a ton of advice about getting in the second time. Many of the people on my flist are academics and are good about helping grad students or potential grad students.

I just got my unofficial rejection.

I wish people would make up their mind. The advisor said I was on the short list and that there weren't many people on the list. Then the secretary said there were 187 applications. What the heck is up with that? Either there weren't many or there were a bunch. Geez.

Sorry to hear about that. That pretty much sucks. You still are looking good with an earlier acceptance. I did receive my ucla news and it was not good. I got it a couple of days ago and I haven't bothered to put it on the sites. Ucla was a total longshot. What has me depressed is someone on whogotin posted that UDub English was going to take a class size of 50 or so..not all of them will get funded. But still..if that's true..ouch. I wasn't even a Top 50 candidate.

ASU is still in the running. They accepted me as an undergrad...maybe they will welcome me again...

Thanks for the advice and encouragement. I'm actually trying to make a career switch into English away from private sector. I won't be able to apply again next year. It's kind of all or nothing for me.

Good luck. I only joined Livejournal on the assumption that I would be on the academic path. I won't maintain my page or take part in the community if things don't pan out. If I do get a hit somewhere..I'll look you up.
